September 17th, 2020
Throughout the summer, we have been dealt with ever changing situations and rest assured that your zone and provincial executives have worked extremely hard on making plans and acting accordingly to government regulations. On September 15th, 2020 the NO5PBA executive board along with our 6 zone executives met virtually to discuss the state of our sport and province. In this meeting the NO5PBA executive along with 3 representatives of each zone voted to change how the 2020-2021 NO5PBA Youth Challenge Provincials will be held. This decision was not taken lightly by anyone involved. For this season, each zone will be hosting an individual Youth Challenge tournament on Saturday December 5th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. (central time) and 12:00 p.m. (eastern time) where individual bowlers will all bowl their five games and scores will be sent in to NO5PBA executive. The scores will then be combined and the national team will be decided upon with still the top 3 men and top 3 ladies making our national team. We understand the challenges this brings but the most important thing was keeping our members and bowling centres safe. The NO5PBA executive along with the 6 zone executives will be meeting monthly to continue discussing future plans and continue working together as a team, making the best possible decisions to keep our members and bowling centres safe. Yours in bowling, Tim Gadd 1st Vice President Northern Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association [email protected] The 2020 NO5PBA AGM was held over the last two nights, July 22 and July 23, over Zoom. The meeting was very productive and overall Zoom was flawless. The meeting went very well with some great discussions on key issues as we head into the unknown that is the 2020/2021 bowlign season. Once the minutes of the meeting are available they will be posted online, but for now here are some key highlights. ELECTIONS
The positions of 1st Vice President, Secretary, Technical Director, and Lottery Chairperson were up for grabs for a 2 year term. Tim Gadd was acclaimed as 1st Vice President, Terri Hamilton was acclaimed as Secretary, and after a vote Norm Sanders was elected to the position of Technical Director. We want to thank George Greenside for over 20 years of dedication to the Board in this capacity and wish him nothing but the best as he enjoys his well deserved retirement. The Lottery Chairperson is a position appointed by the NO5 Executive. The executive met after the AGM finished and after much discussion the executive has appointed Sabrina West from Gateway as the new Lottery Chairperson. SUSPENSIONS AND APPEALS There was lengthy discussion about the suspensions and appeals process after some issues that came up over the last year. The Board agreed that the suspensions and appeals processes need to be looked at. A committee consisting of one rep from the NO5 Executive and one rep from each zone to review the processes and make recommendations to the board. AVERAGE CAP FOR THE POA After some good discussion the decision was made to increase the average cap for the POA to 220 (formerly 215). There was great discussion on this topic. We discussed that not all provinces have an average cap so low average bowlers who qualify for nationals are in for a shock when they get there to find that bowlers have 240 averages from some provinces. It was mentioned that all POA bowlers should be informed of exactly how the tournament works to get rid of the stigma that surrounds higher average bowlers competing in the POA which hopefully won't discourage them from participating. There is concern that lower average bowlers will be intimidated by the higher average bowlers, but having an understanding of exactly how the tournament works could fix that. NO5PBA LOTTERY TICKETS There was great discussion on this topic. Year after year more people and more zones are having trouble selling the $20 tickets. It was decided that, for 2020/2021 onward, the lottery will be reduced to $10 tickets and all zones will be required to sell 400 tickets instead of 200. Having lower priced tickets may help with sales as people are generally more likely to buy a $10 ticket over a $20 ticket. The number of tickets being sold has increased so the price payouts will remain the same. FUTURE MEETINGS OF THE EXECUTIVE AND FULL BOARD It was decided that, as a major cost saving measure and for simplicity, that all future meetings (semi-annual general meeting, annual general meeting, and any meetings required in between) will be held via Zoom. This will make it possible for the executive and delegates to meet more easily and more frequently if needed to discuss certain issues. 2020/2021 PROVINCIAL AND NATIONAL DATES AND LOCATIONS Youth Challenge - Provincial is in Dryden, ON on Dec 6/20 - National is in Manitoba (no dates yet) POA - Provincial is in Nickel District Feb 18 - 20/21 - National is in British Columbia (no dates yet) Open - Provincial is in Thunder Bay Mar 30 - Apr 4/20 - National is in Newfoundland (no dates yet) As the economy reopens and restrictions get lighter the NO5PBA has re-scheduled the annual meeting. The annual meeting, which was previously scheduled July 9 - 11, 2020 has been re-scheduled to July 30 - August 1, 2020 at the Travelodge Hotel in Sudbury. PLEASE BE ADVISED that these dates are conditional on the further lightening of group gathering restrictions. If these restrictions do now allow for us to have an in-person meeting we will cancel the Travelodge booking and hold a virtual meeting instead. We realize that this is on the long weekend so if there are too many conflicts the meeting can be delayed by one week. We ask that all Zone and Executive reports be sent in early (ASAP) as well as any Zone motions and other items for discussion for the agenda.
